Question marks raised over DAB

LONDON - The launch of a second national digital radio multiplex could delay DAB progress, a leading analyst has warned.

The report, by media forecaster Enders Analysis, suggests that the radio industry is only now accepting that there is a problem with the medium.

The report outlines concerns over the speed of the conversion to digital radio, together with the importance of finding a platform that will be embraced by the majority of consumers.

It added that the high cost of DAB transmission had partly undermined confidence in the new medium, with the closure of several digital stations.

The report notes: “Even in 2007, Ofcom was inviting applicants for a second national DAB multiplex as if it were a ‘licence to print money’, rather than a mammoth infrastructure undertaking that would add further spectrum to a platform already suffering from overcapacity.”

However, the report said that having accepted there is a problem with DAB, the industry must now move on to “solve DAB”.

The report comes days after a RadioCentre-sponsored debate in the Houses of Parliament, at which ex-GCap chief executive Ralph Bernard called for the introduction of a digital switchover date for radio.
