Qatar set to expand VCCP brief to national brand

Qatar is in talks with VCCP about extending its brief to handle global advertising for the Qatar Financial Centre to cover branding activity for the country.

The initiative would aim to attract more tourists to the Middle East state and comes amid plans by the Qatar government to diversify its economy away from a reliance on oil.

Oil and gas account for about 60% of Qatar's gross domestic product and provide 85% of its export earnings.

Qatar handed VCCP the 拢10m Financial Centre business without a pitch at the end of April. The Qatar Financial Centre opened in the country's capital, Doha, last year to attract foreign investment.

The advertising campaign for the Financial Centre will involve TV and press activity, primarily targeting a business audience. It is scheduled to launch over the coming month.

Qatar recently announced plans to build a $1.2bn (拢645m) waterfront leisure complex at Doha, which will include an amusement park, theatres, parks and hotels. The building project is expected to be completed in 2009.
