The appointment is the first major change that Dale Gall has made to Profero's management team since he took over as its chief executive.

Dover had overseen digital at VCCP for three years before leaving in January 2010 to go travelling. During his time at the agency, he worked on the "comparethemeerkat" campaign for Comparethemarket.com, as well as on O2, Capital One and Microsoft.

Following Dover's arrival at Profero, its former managing director, Matt Everitt, will move into the newly created role of business development director.

The changes follow a turbulent period at Profero, which has seen the departure of two chief executives, Nick Blunden and Daniele Fiandaca, in quick succession.

Since becoming the chief executive in December last year, Gall has had some success in stabilising the agency, which has since won the global digital business for Smirnoff and retained the Mini UK digital account. Profero has now also retained the digital advertising for Talk to Frank, the Government's drugs awareness initiative, after a pitch.
