
According to the August ABC figures, the tabloid increased circulation by 0.48% from July, to record 3.15 million copies. However, in common with all UK newspapers that publish ABC figures, its August circulation was down year on year, by 0.29%. News International cut the price of The Sun across the UK from 35p to 30p on 8 August,
The Sun’s price cut did not adversely affect the circulations of its tabloid rivals. In what was a good month for the mainstream tabloids, with all increasing circulation from July, the Daily Star increased its circulation by 1.76% month on month, to 751,494 copies. The Daily Mirror’s circulation rose by 0.82% to 1.46 million.
News International’s The Times also enjoyed a good August, with its circulation up by 0.12% from July, to 612,779 copies.
However, the quality sector as a whole experienced a mixed month, with The Guardian (down 1.58%). The Independent (down 2.23%) and the Financial Times (down 1.42%) all posting lower circulations in August than in July.
After suffering several months of declining circulations, Scotland’s two main daily newspapers, Johnston Press–owned The Scotsman and Newsquest-owned The Herald posted the biggest month-on-month circulation increases of any UK newspapers in the ABC report.
The Scotsman managed to increase its circulation by 6.88% from July to 52,821 copies in August, while The Herald’s rose by 4.36% to 63,991 copies.
