Auton has worked at IPC for 26 years and has held a number of senior roles at the company before becoming managing director of Country & Leisure Media in 1998, overseeing titles such as Shooting Times and Country Life.
She became chief executive of the group, which publishes Loaded, Marie Claire and the NME, in March, replacing Sly Bailey, who quit to join Trinity Mirror.
Auton said: "Having worked alongside the PPA on a number of activities over the years, I feel honoured to now be asked to join its board and to be a part of the illustrious team who together lead some seriously heavyweight industry initiatives and market this phenomenal media sector."
The PPA is chaired by Reed Business Information chief executive Keith Jones, who took over the role from Emap Business Communications' Derek Carter in October.
Jones said he welcomed Auton's appointment.
"I am delighted to welcome business leaders of the stature of Sylvia Auton to join our discussions," he said.
