The Portman Group refused to say whether he had another job to go to.

In a statement, the body confirmed it will appoint a successor in due course. Poley remains in his post and will oversee the succession planning phase for the new appointee.

Poley joined the Portman Group in 1997 and has been chief executive since 2006. During his time, he has been closely involved in the development of the industry's code of practice on the naming, packaging and promotion of alcoholic drinks.

Before joining the Portman Group, he worked at the Advertising Standards Authority where he was responsible for managing the pre-publication advice given to advertisers and media on the acceptability of advertisements.
