PlayStation scoops Advertiser of Year at Cannes Festival

LONDON – The president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi, is to be presented with the Advertiser of the Year Award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in recognition of PlayStation2's advertising.

The award is being handed out at the 52nd annual awards festival, which take place in Cannes from June 19-25, in recognition of PlayStation2's impact on the worldwide entertainment industry for its "consistently original and inspirational" use of ads.

Since its launch, PlayStation2 has won 26 Cannes Lions including three Grand Prix. The first being won for the press ad "nipples" in 1999, followed by the press ad "rebirth" in 2003.

Last year TBWA\London won the Film Grand Prix at Cannes for its "mountain" ad for Sony PlayStation. The spot, written by Tony McTear and art directed by Paula Marcantonio and McTear, was directed by Gorgeous' Frank Budgen.

Kutaragi will receive the Advertiser of the Year trophy at the festival on the evening of Saturday June 25.

"During the past 10 years, we have continued to create inspiring advertisements that communicate to the users the new experience and excitement of computer entertainment. I am pleased and honoured to accept this award, which is a great privilege to us all at Sony Computer Entertainment," Kutaragi said.
