According to a report in the Independent today, the company's plans could spark a price war in the adult sector as Playboy plans to spend several million pounds on three new channels, which it is calling Climax3.
Available to BSkyB homes, the channels are what is known as 'pay-per-night' access. However, unlike rivals the Playboy service will offer access to three channels in a cut price deal.
Rivals typically charge £5 for one channel under 'pay-per-night', but Playboy TV plans to offer access to three channels for £3.
It is also serving up an innovative programming style running clips rather than programmes and is hiring MTV-style presenters to present on the channels.
Richard Gale, European head of marketing at Playboy TV told The Independent that in this way, the action should appear "more intense" as hardcore material is not allowed in the UK.
Gale said the move was a response to lack of choice identified by Playboy in its research. Gale said he was hoping to steal market share from rival adult channels, which include Richard Desmond's Fantasy Channel and Television X.
The new Playboy channels will launch this week joining over 30 already available on Sky.
