The furry creatures, who are famed for making good use of the things that everyday folks leave behind, emerged from a burrow in their home of Wimbledon Common to begin tidying up in south-west London. Chubby Womble Orinico donned a Waitrose apron for the occasion.
They were joined by TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp, MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond, members of the Women’s Institute, which launched the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, children from local schools and a number of Waitrose employees.
Rupert Thomas, Waitrose marketing director, said: "We think everyone can take a leaf out of the Wombles’ book and help keep their part of Britain tidy. Our partners take real pride in our role supporting local communities and we are delighted to support this year’s Big Tidy Up."
Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, added: "When it came to celebrating our 60th birthday, we knew we had to do it with a mass clean-up and who better to help us than the world’s most famous litter-pickers, the Wombles?
"We are delighted Waitrose shares our vision for a country that is clean and litter-free and their support has made this birthday celebration possible."
The Wombles will spend October travelling to Yorkshire, the Midlands, Chesire and Devon to support other clean-up operations.
