The ‘going into space’ event gave attendees the chance to take a close-up look at the latest Mars rover prototype called Bruno in the venue’s Exploring Space gallery. It was provided by Astrium, an aerospace subsidiary of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), which supplies civil and military space systems and services.
Guests also had the opportunity to speak to experts from EADS about the prototype, as well as exploring other kit including satellites, a harpoon, which disposes of junk in space, and a space missile.
Scott McKenzie-Cook, special events manager at the Science Museum, told Event: "Space is always a popular subject with our guests and we always theme one of our Lates around this topic each year. Working with EADS has allowed us to bring in some very interesting kit which we don’t always get the opportunity to do.
"The beauty of the Lates series is that it is a good combination of practical activities, talks, make and take sesions and comedy, and with the space theme it has a strong link to our collection in the museum."
Other highlights of the event included the Punk Science: We Need Space comedy science show in the IMAX theatre; expert caricaturist Chris Rydee who showed guests how to draw cosmonauts; and a ‘light up the tardis’ practical session in which attendees could make a simple circuit and create their own miniature paper tardis.
Visitors also had the chance to dress up as cockroaches and take a tour of the museum to get an alternative insight into the human race, while other guests made wishes on cards and hung them from trees in the Wellcome Wing as part of model Lily Cole’s social network Impossible, which encourages users to help one another.
The Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea made an appearance at the event, and the Science Museum hosted the London Science Festival closing party as part of last night's Lates.
