Peperami and Hamlet contend for Best Ads Never Seen

LONDON - An ad for Peperami is one of the contenders for the Best Ads Never Seen, after it failed to see the light of day with its 'bit of an animal' strapline in the wake of the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001.

The spot, called "reunion" and created by Lowe London, showed a Peperami saying "I love these family reunions" before the camera drew back to reveal that he had his arm around a pork chop and a rump roast of beef.

The spot was part of the long-running campaign that first ran in the mid 1990s featuring actor Ade Edmondson's voice, but it never aired due to the foot-and-mouth crisis that swept the UK at the beginning of 2001.

The ad was written and art directed by Ray Brennan and Steve Meredith and directed by Ken Lidster. Click here to watch the .

It is just one of the controversial ads that have been submitted for the project, which will include a programme to be screened on Five later this year. Another contender is a spot for Hamlet cigars, created by CDP, that never made it to television screens because of legislation banning tobacco advertising. It was written by Paul Turner, art directed by Paul Sharp and directed by Migel Supujneck.

A third ad, for CNN, shows a man urinating into the petrol tank of a Porsche.

Marcel Knobil, founder of the Best Ads Never Seen, said: "Some exceptionally creative and controversial ads are among an extremely high standard of commercials being entered into the Best Ads Never Seen."

There is still time to enter the competition for anyone who has a commercial that has been presented to a client over the past 15 years but never ran. There is no charge for entry and the deadline is this weekend.

The ads will be judged by a panel to include: Trevor Beattie, TBWA\London chairman and creative director; Dave Alberts, chairman of Grey Worldwide; Damon Collins, creative director of Lowe; and Luke White, creative director of McCann Erickson. On the client side will be Alison Copus, marketing director of Virgin Atlantic, while Nick Lewin, a director at Cowboy Films, will step up for the production side.
