Penguin to podcast Dickens' Christmas classic

LONDON - Penguin is to distribute a podcast of Charles Dickens' seasonal classic 'A Christmas Carol', the first full version of a book the publisher has made available via its fledgling service.

The Dickens podcast will be in five instalments running on December 15-16 and December 19-21 and read by the actor Geoffrey Palmer, best known for his roles in 'Butterflies', 'As Time Goes by' and 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin'.

Jeremy Ettinghausen, Penguin audio publisher, said this latest podcast was being promoted as a Christmas present.

"This is very new to us and we are still getting a feel for podcasting but it is something we are very keen to develop."

Ettinghausen said that Penguin was looking to expand its podcast activity and might in the future extend this to up-and-coming authors

"The type of things I can see us doing in the future are making available the kinds of work that haven't yet been published, either work by new authors or unpublished short stories by existing authors."

Since Penguin's podcasting service launched last month it has featured exclusive interviews and extracts from Jamie Oliver and Nick Hornby, among others, and has been visited by around 10,000 people from 60 countries.
