Ulster Unionist peer Lord Laird singled out two sailing events companies, Top Sail Events and Charters and Red Sky Hospitality and Sailing Events, and asked the Government to investigate "what financial and other inducements" they have offered Olympic decision makers.

The Olympic Delivery Authority has begun investigating the written parliamentary question, although both companies were at a loss to explain the origin of Laird's enquiry.

"We have had no communication with any Olympic people," said Red Sky MD Helen Armour. "I have registered our interest on CompeteFor but as yet there has been no response."
