On 20 and 21 September, the Open House London 2014 programme will feature a series of free events including neighbourhood walks, engineering and landscape tours, cycle rides and experts talks.
For the tenth year, Open House London has teamed up with Maggie’s Cancer Centres, which operates a network of drop-in centres for anyone that has been affected by cancer, to host the Maggie’s Culture Crawl. The ticketed event features a 15-mile part-night walk, part-cultural adventure, around the capital. It will allow attendees to visit buildings such as the Foreign & Commonwealth Office as well as see performances from musicians, dancers and artists.
The organisation has also formed a collaboration with the Institution of Civil Engineers. As part of the partnership a series of engineering walks and site visits to major construction sites will form part of the event programme.
The Open House Junior programme will consist of activities for kids and families including architectural model-making and quiz trails as part of the Archibus tour with Arriva and the London Transport Museum.
Victoria Thornton, founding director of Open-City, said: "Open House is a unique and vibrant annual event, offering people across London the chance to explore and learn about the capital’s architecture. In 2013, 87% of participants said the Open House annual event was the best way see, explore and learn about the capital’s architecture and new public spaces.
"This year we’re putting together a great programme of open buildings, walks, tours and talks taking in everything from award-winning contemporary homes to major regeneration areas."
Among the more than 800 properties featuring in this year’s Open House London programme includes 10 Downing Street, the Leadenhall Building - known affectionately as 'The Cheesegrater' - and 30 St Mary Axe, also known as 'The Gherkin'.
