The site, powered by Yahoo's BOSS technology, which allows third parties to build search services, has attracted more than 3,000 registered users. Users can register for free.
The site does not feature any paid advertisers and has been funded by Top Position and founder Daniel Jupp. Oparla will not charge its advertisers on a cost-per-click basis, but will instead impose a fixed monthly rate to advertise on its search engine. It will charge between £300 and £400 per quarter, subject to review and modification, depending on traffic.
Oparla has been in talks with Yahoo over a display advertising deal. However, the online giant said it will only advertise on site if Oparla drops its prize draw model, because of the site's vulnerability to click fraud.
Jupp said it will review the prize draw model in three months. An initial review found 80% of users would stop using the site if the prize draw model was removed. "We will always put users first," said Jupp.
Later this month, Oparla will run a radio and TV campaign to raise brand awareness of its service.
