Online backlash over Death Row Dinners pop-up

Twitter users have hit out at the organisers of a new pop-up dining event concept, called Death Row Dinners, which allows ticketholders to experience the ultimate last meal.

The concept, which has been scheduled to run from 24 October until 29 November, allows 80 ‘inmates’ to experience a night behind bars in a pop-up restaurant in London’s Hoxton Square. It is being organised by a company called Dirty Dishes.

Once the restaurant has served all guests, three people will be selected at random to then have their own meal of choice cooked at their homes, along with up to five guests, by Death Row Dinners’ chef and assistants.

A statement on the event’s website read: "We're shocked and saddened by the response to Death Row Dinners and are genuinely very sorry for any offence caused. The pop-up is intended to explore the concept of last meals; anyone who has ever been to a dinner party has probably had this conversation – what would they love their last meal to be.

"In light of the response to the idea we are considering our next steps and will update everyone with our decision."

In response to the statement being tweeted out via the event’s dedicated account, a number of Twitter users have hit back at the nature of the concept. Lika (@inmywindow) tweeted @DeathRowDinners saying: "Genuinely what response did you expect? The entire concept is appalling."

Another user, named @PrimrosePrints, added: "Your only "next step" should be to cancel the whole thing."
