An estimated 20 million people are monthly users of a tablet, with figures based on users either owning a tablet themselves or sharing it with a family member or others.

By 2017, the tablet will be a device used by more than half the UK population, according to predictions from eMarketer.

The findings come after Tesco launched a tablet that will cost as little as £60 for Clubcard customers, with chief executive Philip Clarke claiming the supermarket wanted to after Ofcom research found only one in four UK households have a tablet.

Tablet usage is continuing to edge up, with figures from eMarketer showing that in May some 19.7 million of people were using a tablet at least once a month.

The rise of the mobile web is making people more accustomed to tablets and is moving the category beyond a device for just early adopters, believes eMarketer.

While the bulk of tablet owners are still in the 25- to 54-year-old age range, the fastest growth in tablet audience for the rest of the year is expected to happen among those aged under 12 and over 65, according to the research.

Although 59 per cent of tablet users will use an iPad this year, eMarketer forecasts the growth rate for iPad users will drop to single digits next year and stay at that level through to 2017.

Research from eMarketer was collected via data from a mix of research firms, government agencies, media outlets and company reports.
