One third of consumer sectors expected to grow in 2009

LONDON - Research analyst Mintel is predicting around 150 consumer sectors, such as online clothing retail, will grow in 2009 as a result of changing spending habits.

Mintel, which analysed over 400 sectors, found growth in 37% as consumers looked for cheaper alternatives to how they buy food, clothing and entertainment.

The online clothing market, populated by retailers such as Asos, is likely to grow by 23% this year as consumers look to save money by seeking alternatives to the high street. However, womenswear and menswear sectors are expected to fall by 2.3% and 1.2% respectively.

In food, eggs are likely to rise 15% in value as consumers become aware of their health benefits and the trend for free range and organic options makes them more expensive. Chocolate sales are also predicted to surge by 7% as a low-cost treat.

Mintel also predicts UK consumers are set to change their leisure habits with night clubs and theme parks both set to see revenue fall by 4%. As result cinema attendance will continue to rise.

Fan loyalty to football clubs mean the sport is likely to withstand the recession and will increase value by 1.6%.

Richard Perks, Mintel director of research, said: "These figures confirm that affordability will take precedence over lifestyle in 2009 as we further feel the impact of the current economic climate.

"While the trend of trading down will have a negative effect for many consumer sectors, other sectors are benefiting as British consumers change direction and adapt their lifestyle choices accordingly."
