New Zealander Poynton is experienced in the role of judging radio advertising -- he chaired the last Aerial Awards, which recognise the best of the industry in the UK.
Poynton said that it was an honour to be chosen as the president of the inaugural Cannes jury.
"We've concentrated so much on new media in recent years, and yet radio is such a power channel that's been growing all the while. Consequently, it will be very interesting for all advertising folk to finally see what radio, with its rich comedic potential, can achieve," he said.
He has worked in Australian and New Zealand agencies, before moving to London to join M&C Saatchi, where he eventually became deputy creative director, creating spots including the PJ O'Rourke-fronted "Johnny Foreigner" ad for British Airways.
In 2001, he returned to Australia to work for Saatchi & Saatchi, and he returned to London in 2003 to his current role at O&M.
The Cannes festival takes place from June 19 to 25. It will be the first to be held after its acquisition by Emap in a £52.5m deal last August.
