Ofcom awards new local digital radio licences

LONDON - Ofcom has awarded new local DAB licences to cover Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Northeast Wales and West Cheshire.

This new 12-year licences come as part of Ofcom’s plan to develop DAB coverage in parts of the country that so far lack a local digital service.

The regulator chose between two applicants for the Herefordshire and Worcestershire licence, with winner MuxCo Hereford & Worcester proposing to offer eight programme services ranging from music and easy listening through to youth and religious programming. Its contemporary hit radio service, Wyvern FM, is provided by GCap Media. Ofcom estimated that the licensee would have a potential audience of 586,000 over-15 year-olds.

A MuxCo consortium also won the licence for Northeast Wales and West Cheshire, where it intends to offer seven programme services. GCap also provides its contemporary hits service, Marcher Sound. The licence area has potential audience of 647,000 over-15 year-olds.
