Observer launches music as third monthly magazine

LONDON – The Observer newspaper is to launch its third monthly magazine later this year, adding The Observer Music Monthly to sit alongside Observer Sport and Observer Food Monthly.

The latest addition to the growing monthly stable of magazines promises to move beyond the traditional territory of music journalism to offer a different perspective on many aspects of the industry.

The launch will be backed by an advertising campaign created by Observer agency Mother and each new issue will also benefit from a major marketing push. The advertising will be content driven, representing a unique angle on music each month.

Marc Sands, marketing director of Guardian Newspapers, said: "Following on from the outstanding success of both OSM and OFM, we are confident that the music magazine will attract a significant number of new readers to The Observer."

The magazine is to be edited by Caspar Llewellyn-Smith, who joins The Observer from the Daily Telegraph where he was assistant editor of the Telegaph Magazine since 2002. Prior to that, he was the editor of the Saturday Arts & Books section.

Earlier it was reported that Louise France, editor of The Observer's Review section, had been brought in to work on developing Observer Music Monthly but the paper denied that the title was set to launch with France as the editor.

The move comes as the Ministry of Sound and Conde Nast prepare to launch their music and celebrity style title Trash.

According to Llewellyn-Smith: "The magazine will provide a great opportunity to review the way music is covered in the print media. Most newspaper coverage of the pop scene is terribly bland, and the specialist publications cater for very small readerships. I believe that people have broader tastes than that and this is something we will be taking into consideration."

Music is unlikely to be the last title launched. Earlier this year reports said that dummies had been made for several different titles and that Observer editor Roger Alton was looking at subjects including music, entertainment, relationships and fashion and style for the next Observer Monthly launch.

With music now ready to launch, entertainment, relationships and fashion and style could be next in line.

"OMM will offer an original, vibrant and exciting look at the music world and like OSM and OFM will tackle the subject matter in its broadest sense. We are delighted to have Caspar editing the magazine," Alton said.

Like Observer Food Monthly and Observer Sport Monthly, OMM is likely to have a focus on strong photography and writing.
