Observer could add music to food and sport monthlies

LONDON - The Observer is looking to follow the success of its glossy Food Monthly and Sport Monthly supplements with a third magazine, possibly on music.

Reports say that dummies have been made for several different titles and that Observer editor Roger Alton is looking at subjects including music, relationships and fashion and style for the next Observer Monthly launch. Last year, it published a one-off magazine called Observer Travel Magazine.

Louise France, editor of The Observer's Review section, has been brought in to work on developing Observer Music Monthly but, according to reports, Alton denies that this title is set to launch with France as the editor.

"Louise did some work, like a lot of people here, on some of the dummies but there is no definite decision," Alton told Press Gazette.

France joined The Observer from The Independent in 2000 as deputy editor of Life magazine. She left that role two years later to edit the Review section of The Observer.

Alton says that there is quite a way to go before a decision is made about which new title will be launched and when. He could not be reached for comment at the time of writing.

Both Observer Food Monthly and Observer Sport Monthly magazines have an emphasis on stylish photography and top journalism, featuring writers such as Nigel Slater and Tony Adams.
