The O2 rooftop walkway: see the video

A 190m rooftop walkway is to be built over The O2's iconic white dome in time for the London 2012 Games.

Greenwich council approved plans for the proposed structure at a meeting last night.

The walkway will be suspended from The O2's distinctive yellow masts 60m above ground and will be capable of accommodating up to 90 people at any one time.

Visitors will be able to walk to the central viewing platform from a base-station situated at the entrance to The O2.

Architect Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners – the original designer of The O2 – has been brought in to design the project to complement the existing structure.

Bosses hope the walkway will attract new visitors to the Docklands venue.

"The principle embodies our desire to create a daytime and evening experience that will appeal not only to existing visitors to The O2, but also attract further visitors from across London," said AEG Europe executive director for Real Estate Alistair Wood.

"The lightweight nature of the structure will ensure that the experience is as close to walking on the roof of the tent as possible, whilst the 60m climb and the fact that the experience is open air will add to the sense of excitement and adrenaline."
