O2 launches gory horror series for its phone customers

LONDON - O2 has commissioned a series of two-minute horror films for customers to download and watch on their handsets, in the world's first made-for-mobile horror series.

The 20 episodes of 'When Evil Calls', which goes live on October 23 in the build up to Halloween, is the result of a tie-up with production company Pure Grass Films, digital channel Zone Horror and the latter's sister company Zone Mobile.

O2 customers around the world will be able to download the series by visiting the O2 Active web portal or by texting the word "wish" to 61616. However, because it includes scenes of violence, nudity and sex, the series will only be available after a 9pm watershed.

The series will also become available to non-O2 customers through Zone Horror's WAP website and through other mobile operators.

Actors appearing in the series include: Frenchman Dominique Pinon, who starred in 'Delicatessen', 'Alien: Resurrection' and 'Amelie'; Chris Barrie, the comic actor from UK series 'Red Dwarf' and 'The Brittas Empire'; Ray Winstone's daughter Lois; Pierce Brosnan's son Sean; disgraced former Tory MP Jonathan Aitken's daughter Victoria; and Essex-born topless model Vikki Blows. The series was written and directed by up-and-coming British horror director Johannes Roberts.

The plot of 'When Evil Calls' is hinged on the appearance of a scary, evil clown who persuades Samantha, the headmaster's geeky daughter, to send a text message on to her schoolmates. The text message grants the wishes of students at Wilburn Hall boarding school, but with a high price attached. For example, a character called Hilary says she would give her right arm to lose weight. The blades of a kitchen waste disposal oblige her, by cutting off her arm.

After many of the students have come to a sticky end, Samantha races against the clock to save the school's rapidly dwindling student population.
