Number of online display ads increase 21%

LONDON - The amount of online display advertising activity in the UK rose by 21% during the first four months of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, according to new figures from Nielsen.

Number of online display ads increase 21%

The increase does not mean an increase in ad spend as advertisers are currently getting more for their money due to falling ad rates.

Nielsen tracks the number of advertisers, the number of individual campaigns they ran and the number of ad creatives used, all of which increased by 21% year-on-year.

On average, more than 5,900 advertisers were running online display ad campaigns a month during the first four months of 2009, with 11,000 campaigns being run and 32,000 different ad creatives being used.

The retail and finance sectors, driven by high-street advertisers such as Marks & Spencer, Tesco, HSBC and Barclays, are responsible for the lion's share of advertisers, accounting for a quarter of all online display advertisers in the first four months of 2009.
