NSPCC told to withdraw 'sexual abuse' press ad

LONDON - The NSPCC has been told to pull a national press ad, after readers challenged its claim that 'one in six children in the UK are sexually abused'.

NSPCC told to withdraw 'sexual abuse' press ad

The charity explained that the figure came from a report it published in 2000, which concluded that the proportion of children who were abused or aged 12 and under and subject to a contact or non-contact sexual act was 16% or one in six.

However, the Advertising Standards Authority considered that the claim was likely to be interpreted as current and did not clarify the report's definition of abuse.

The body ruled that the ad must not appear again in its current form.
