MediaWeek reported in December that Mawer had parted ways with the Richard Desmond-owned operation just four months after his promotion to commercial director from digital director.
Northern & Shell subsequently clarified that Mawer is still involved with the business as a digital consultant.
Stan Myerson, the group joint managing director, said: "Jason Mawer will now be digital consultant for Northern & Shell, advising on the digital strategy and direction across the business working closely with Jane Putley and the digital team.
"Jason will also be key to the recruitment process for a new head of digital who will work with Jane Putley."
The previous head of digital, Nick Bradley, is understood to have left the company at the end of September to join Factory Media, which produces and sells content helping brands reach adventure sports fans.
Bradley's departure followed soon after his promotion from head of digital agency sales to head of digital, which accompanied Mawer’s promotion to commercial director in August.
Putley, who was made deputy commercial director when Mawer was promoted, is continuing in that role as well as retaining her former responsibilities for group trading but is now reporting to Myerson.
The company is understood to be keeping its options open as to whether it appoints a direct successor to Mawer.
