NME: new format for 50th birthday

IPC Media has announced a major repositioning of the NME to take place on the anniversary of its launch 50 years ago.

From the April 17 issue, the music weekly will be resized so that it can be displayed on the news-stand shelves alongside other major music titles for the first time.

While retaining the newspaper format of the title, it will also now include a glossy front cover, increased pagination, a "refreshed" logo and enhanced photography throughout.

"The magazine market's as congested and competitive as ever and over the past 10 years the floor position of NME in newsagents has beenmarginalized," said NME publishing and online director Neil Robinson.

"With an improved display position, investment in the
editorial product and major awareness of the
NME through its 50th year activity, I feel confident we're set for a very exciting year ahead."

NME held its circulation steady in the latest round of ABC figures to December 2001, with 70,456 - up 0.6% on the year. Rival Emap Performance title Kerrang!overtook it with a massive increase of 63.5% on the yearto 76,841.

Meanwhile, to commemorate the 50th birthday issues, the paper will also be hosting NME Exposed, an exhibition of
50 classic rock photographs chosen from its archive.

The exhibition at the Eyestorm Gallery, Maddox Street, London, will feature images to be auctioned in support of the War Child charity.
