Nintendo will not drop ads starring Tarrant and wife

LONDON - Nintendo has said it has no plans to pull an ad campaign showing 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' presenter Chris Tarrant forgetting his wife's anniversary, in the wake of news that the couple have split and are set for a multimillion-pound divorce.

The spot, created by Leo Burnett, is one of a series that Tarrant stars in to promote the game 'Dr Kawashima's Brain Training', which is played on the Nintendo DS Lite console.

The ad in question features Tarrant forgetting his wedding anniversary and being chastised by Ingrid. Then after using the 'Dr Kawashima's Brain Training' game on his Nintendo DS, Tarrant's memory improves.

Tarrant announced yesterday that his marriage had broken down, after reports that he had had a 10-year-long affair. He said he was "deeply sorry" for hurting his wife and two children.

Nonetheless, the ad was still running on daytime television yesterday and is not going to be withdrawn.

Dawn Paine, marketing director of Nintendo UK, said: "At this stage we have no plans to change our 'Brain Training' campaign."

It is another case that highlights the dangers of using a celebrity to endorse products.

Other brands to be caught out include Brylcreem, whose endorsement by David Beckham was somewhat devalued when the football star shaved his head shortly after his ad campaign for the hair product appeared.

Other incidents have stars spotted using rival brands to the ones they are paid so much to endorse -- this has happened to Pepsi, when Britney Spears was seen drinking Diet Coke on a number of occasions.

Sainsbury's was also left red-faced when Jamie Oliver's wife Jules was pictured carrying shopping bags from upmarket Waitrose and not Sainsbury's, which pays her husband millions of pounds in endorsement fees.

There were also reports that Quaker Oats had to abandon a marketing campaign starring Paula Radcliffe after she failed to complete two races at the Olympic Games in 2004. It was felt that the "helps you go the distance" strapline may not have been so powerful in the wake of the long-distance runner's problems.
