Nike scores most talked-about ad slot during World Cup summer

LONDON - Nike's World Cup TV advertising campaign featuring Real Madrid star Luis Figo and Eric Cantona was the most talked about commercial of the past three months, according to a survey.

Nike scores most talked-about ad slot during World Cup summer

And, as to be expected in the months where the World Cup dominated the news, football-related campaigns fill the list of the 10 most talked about ads.

The Ads that Make the News survey by Propeller Communications and Media Report Editorial found that Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam's Nike spot, featuring the Elvis Presley song 'A Little Less Conversation', received nearly twice as many stories in the national press as the next nearest ad.

The four weeks at number one for the Elvis track can not have hurt either.

In the number two slot of ads making the news was the story of David Beckham signing for Pepsi, along with Gareth Gates and Britney Spears.

Billy Connolly's appearance for the rebranded Lotto was the third most talked about campaign. But by number four, it was back to football, with the Thierry Henry commercial for Renault, created by Publicis, and Sven Goran Ericksson's appearance in the Jamie Oliver/Sainsbury's ad drawing the same number of mentions.

Martin Loat, managing director of Propeller, said: "Sex, celebrities and controversy are the usual staples of Ads that Make the News, but not surprisingly they were supplanted by the World Cup during the April-June period."

The survey also found that the Daily Star and the Daily Express are the most ad-friendly newspapers, followed by the Daily Mirror.
