Nike looks to pull Ronaldo World Cup television spots

LONDON - Nike is looking to pull the final ad in the high-profile 'Joga Bonito' campaign featuring Brazilian striker Ronaldo, after questions regarding his performance in the World Cup tournament in Germany.

"Homage", the final ad in the seven-ad campaign, was expected to break tomorrow June 17 across the globe, and it is believed that the advertiser is currently trying to pull the spots from television schedules globally.

A spokeswoman for Nike said: "A number of ad spots, eg Rooney 'heart', Ronaldinho 'joy' and Brazil 'team' have been filmed as part of the 'Joga Bonito' campaign and are being hosted on . 

"A spot has been filmed with Ronaldo, but to date, it is not confirmed when it will run."

Nike is understood to be worried about Ronaldo's poor performance in Wednesday's match against Group F match against Croatia, and Ronaldo's association with the brand.

Ronaldo was substituted after 69 minutes on Wednesday, after a performance that many commentators referred to as uneventful. Brazil won the match after going ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 44th minute by forward Kaka winning the match.

The Real Madrid striker visited a clinic on Wednesday complaining of dizziness and headaches.

But in a statement, he said: "I felt quite sick on Wednesday and the doctor decided to take me to hospital and did a series of tests, but nothing was abnormal."

He added: "To be sincere, I wasn't happy with my performance against Croatia but the most important thing was that we won.

"In the next game I hope to do things a bit better."

In the Nike campaign, which has previously featured fellow Brazilian striker Ronaldinho, former Manchester United star Eric Cantona names Ronaldo as "the miracle man" in "homage", the final ad in series of seven "Joga Bonito" ads for Nike created by Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam, and booked through WPP-agency MindShare. The 60-second spot, shows Ronaldo's creative footballing skills, with former Manchester United star Cantona referring to him as "boy wonder, the king, the miracle man, the keeper's nightmare, the phenomenon".

"Joga Bonito", Portuguese for "play beautifully", began in March with Cantona bursting into a German TV studio to proclaim what football is really about -- skill, passion and style.

England striker Wayne Rooney, who has just recovered from a broken metatarsal bone, featured in "heart" with England team mate Rio Ferdinand and his club's boss, Sir Alex Ferguson. Rooney's team concede a goal in training, so the Manchester United star decides to go in goal himself.

The "homage" ad was directed by Ulf Johansson and produced by Philippa Smith of Smith & Sons.

Brazil are due to face fellow Group F team Australia on Sunday, when the "Joga Bonito" spots were due to air.

In 1998, there were reports that Ronaldo had a seizure before the World Cup final against France. His name was not on the team sheet given to officials 72 minutes before the match, but he was finally included as part of the Brazilian side half an hour before kick-off. Brazil lost 3-0 to France after a dismal performance, especially by a below-par Ronaldo.

In an official statement at the time, Nike scotched speculation that it had put any pressure on Ronaldo to take part in the final.

The sportswear manufacturer said at the time: "With regards to rumours circulating about presumed pressures Nike put on the Brazilian national soccer team so that Ronaldo would play, Nike wants to emphasise that the report of such involvement is absolutely false."
