James Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation Europe & Asia, is thought to be considering establishing three separate units across News Group Newspapers and Times Media comprising commercial, digital and operations.
At present, NI's quality and red-top brands, for the most part, operate independently and handle their own marketing, commercial and circulation activities, headed by Times Media managing director Paul Hayes and News Group Newspapers managing director Mike Anderson.
The move is likely to mean that Hayes, Anderson and News Group deputy managing director Mike Gordon will all vie for the head of commercial, digital and operations units under consideration.
Several sources believe that Hayes will head the commercial unit with Anderson likely to head the operations unit, should it be created.
It is understood that each of the three planned divisions would report to News International managing director Clive Milner, who would continue to report to Murdoch.
The restructure could also lead to the combining of two jobs into one role in some parts of the business.
For example, Roland Agambar, News Group Newspapers' sales and marketing director and Katie Vanneck, sales and marketing director for Times Media, could end up vying for the top marketing role.
Murdoch's future plans for NI are being informed by Boston Consulting Group, which is undertaking a review of the business. News International said it was currently in a consultative process and could not comment.
