Newsweek looks over old Iron Curtain

Newsweek has become the first Western news magazine to launch in Russia with the publication this week of Russky Newsweek.

The Russian-language Newsweek is published in collaboration with the Moscow-based Axel Springer Russia, and will have its own staff of top of Russian reporters and editors.

The two appointments made to head to team are Leonid Bershidsky, editorial director of Axel Springer Russia, and Alexander Gordeev, who will be the title鈥檚 editor-in-chief.

 

Newsweek is also stepping up its distribution in China.

 

Newsweek Select has been available in Hong Kong since 2003 and will soon be available in mainland China.

 

Newsweek Select is the first Chinese-language magazine based on content from al US-owned newsmagazine and is published by Hong Kong鈥檚 Vertex Group.

 

Richard M. Smith, Newsweek chairman and editor-in-chief, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to reach two important new audiences and offer our readers in Russia and China superb coverage of local and global issues and events in their own language.鈥

 

Newsweek publishes four English editions (US, Europe, Asia and Latin America) and has now eight local language editions under license.

 

Meanwhile the launch comes the same day as current US magazine favourite Maxim is reported to be eyeing a national radio launch in the country.
