News of the World has such a Fabulous boost

LONDON - News International’s multimillion- pound investment in launching News of the World glossy magazine, Fabulous, is paying early dividends with the paper one of only two Sunday titles to increase circulation.

According to February ABC figures, the News of the World recorded a circulation of 3,281,287, an increase of 0.51% from January. Its performance was only bettered by The Observer, which increased its circulation by 4.3% to 464,005 copies.

The News of the World outperformed red-top rival the Sunday Mirror’s circulation, which dropped by nearly 1.4% month on month to 1,348,395 copies. Its performance also helped the popular press outperform the Sunday quality and mid-market sectors.

Although the Rupert Murdoch- owned title’s circulation was down year on year by 2.7%, its performance within the Sunday red-top market over the past year was eclipsed only by the Sunday Mirror, which dropped by 1.9% over the period.

However, the News of the World did sell 66,000 discounted copies in February, up 36% from January, and it also increased its sales overseas by 7.5% from the previous month.

Despite the strong ABCs, some believe News Inter¬national would have expected a bigger circulation uplift from Fabulous. Rob Lynam, press buyer at Mediaedge:cia, said: “They would have been looking for higher numbers. The promotions behind Fabulous will continue and it is arguable that not everyone has tested the magazine yet.”

The Observer, under new editor John Mulholland, was the only Sunday paper to record a year-on-year rise in February. It upped its circulation by 5% over the year to 464,005 copies.
