News International sparks talk of men's launch as it hires Nuts commercial chief

LONDON - News International's magazines division has appointed a commercial director, with Karl Marsden joining from Nuts and NME publisher IPC Ignite.

A News International spokeswoman would not comment on whether Marsden had yet joined, but IPC confirmed that he had resigned before Christmas.

Marsden's pedigree as group ad director, and more recently group commercial director, for Nuts, NME, Loaded and Uncut indicates that News International may be preparing to take on the men's weeklies, which some observers blame for The Sun's circulation decline.

The first two titles from the new News International division are a real-life weekly with the working title Love It to be launched on Tuesday February 7, followed by homes and interiors monthly Inside Out on March 16.

In a second appointment, Augusta Barnes has joined as publisher of Love It. She formerly worked for Emap as publisher of New Woman and Top Sante, leaving the company last year.

IPC reacted to Marsden's departure by promoting display sales director Sam Finlay to group ad director for Ignite.
