News International promotes Gordon to deputy MD

LONDON - News International has promoted Mike Gordon, general manager of News Group Newspapers, to deputy managing director as part of an increased focus on the development of the company's digital business.

Gordon, who joined News International in 1987, will report to Mike Anderson, managing director of NGN, which houses The Sun and the News of the World.

Anderson said: "At a time when The Sun and News of the World hold the highest ever market share and is now officially the fastest-growing news and entertainment site in the UK, Gordon will provide us with a dedicated focus for our non-newspaper business."

Anderson added that Gordon will also explore commercial partnerships in line with News International's growing online audience.

He said: "Along with growing our own businesses, there are also opportunities through joint venture, partnerships and acquisition."

Gordon said: "This is a great time to help choreograph the future of a business with such great content. We can see some very exciting opportunities with the convergence of media devices, the growth in penetration of broadband and the ever-increasing usage of mobile."

Earlier this month, The Sun's website claimed it gained 56m new readers from around the world in 2006, following a site redesign.

According to ABC Electronic, the site generated 1.2bn page impressions over 2006. The Sun is planning to introduce new features and further changes to the site this year.
