The New York Times to charge users for email alerts

' Times News Tracker service had previously been free, but in an email yesterday the paper said it had suspended the service and was relaunching it with annual subscription fee of $19.95 (£12.10) a year.

As part of an introductory offer, those who sign up for the paid-for news alert service receive a $10 gift certificate for the NYT online store.

Times News Tracker allows subscribers to follows as many as 10 subjects of interest and have alerts sent to them on these topics. The service also gives free access for 90 days to archived articles.

The service allows users to choose three types of alert: Times Topic Alert; Keyword Alerts; and Ticker Symbol Alerts.

The New York Times has already introduced charges for its archive service, costing users $2.50 per article. Like the Times in the UK, the NY Times also charges an annual subscription fee of $34.95 to play its online crossword puzzle.

Users of the service have a two-week period of grace as News Tracker migrates from free to paid-for.

The latest online charges only affects News Trackers and not other free emails services, such as Today's Headlines.

The NYTimes.com claims around 500,000 unique users currently use its service.
