New Statesman falls 10% as other news weeklies gain

LONDON - New Statesman, which lost its editor John Kampfner earlier this week, has suffered a 9.8% fall in its circulation to 26,208 copies, according to the magazine ABC figures for July-December 2007.

Its performance went against a rising period-on-period trend in the current affairs weekly market, which was led by Prospect, The Spectator and The Economist.

Prospect overtook New Statesman's circulation after rising 7.5% period on period to 26,767. While Prospect is up 20.2% year on year, New Statesman is down 12.7%.

Kampfner, who was at the left-leaning political weekly for three years, is believed to have rowed with its owner Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson over lack of investment. In his leaving message to staff he said ambitions could not be realised because of budgetary issues.

The Spectator, after two years under editor Matthew d'Ancona, has reached a circulation figure of 75,633 copies, up 3.3% period on period and 5% year on year.

Dennis' current affairs round-up The Week is also winning more sales, gaining 1% period on period and 7.7% year on year to 145,197 copies.

Private Eye was steady on 207,566 copies, down 0.7% on period on period and by the same amount year on year.

Time Magazine's British Isles edition was down 0.9% period on period and down 5.6% year on year to 135,496 copies; its continental Europe edition (excluding the UK) is on 335,448 copies, up 0.4% period on period and down 3.5% year on year.

The Economist continued its run of good form in both the UK and Europe. Its UK edition is on 181,374 copies, up 4.9% period on period and 6.7% year on year, while the continental Europe edition is on 233,455 copies, up 3.5% period on period and 2.9% year on year.

The Business recorded a figure of 41,426 copies for this period but did not submit reports for the previous two periods making a comparison impossible.

The Barclay brothers-owned weekly title ceased publication from this week and is transforming into a monthly called Spectator Business, set to launch in the spring.
