Sky Player TV can now be accessed on any broadband PC or Mac allowing viewers to watch live TV and some on-demand content on the channels they subscribe to.
Initially, the entertainment pack will offer the Disney Channel, British Eurosport, National Geographic, Sky News and Sky Sports News, with MTV ONE, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr being made available later this month,
Users will be able to add to their entertainment pack by subscribing to one or both of the Sky Sports Packs to access Sky Sports 1, 2, 3, and Sky Sports Xtra.
The entertainment pack will cost £15 a month. The addition of all of the Sky Sports channels brings the price to £34.
Sky TV customers will still be able to watch the on-demand content from the channels they have access to on their TV set. Customers with Sky Multiroom or Sky Broadband Max are able to watch live channels online at no extra charge.
Viewers will be able to choose from a number of quality levels to suit their broadband connection. The broadcaster says the highest quality offers a viewing experience comparable with standard definition TV.
The new Sky Player TV service was developed with the support of Microsoft with its Silverlight and PlayReady technologies supporting the introduction of live streamed channels and support across PC and Mac.
Mike Darcey, chief operating officer of BSkyB, said the new service has been launched in response to the "diverse needs" of today's customers and recognises that for some, the computer is now the preferred screen through which to watch TV.
The Sky Player launched in January 2006 and claimed to be the first legal movie download service. It now has thousands of hours of on-demand content from Sky and third party channels.
