New high for social sites as Bebo overtakes Google

LONDON - The popularity of social networks in the UK hit a new high in August with Bebo overtaking Google in page view rankings for the first time, according to statistics from research firm ComScore.

Bebo registered over 8.6bn page views in August compared to Google’s 8.46bn, completing a remarkable rise over the last 12 months. In August 2006, Bebo registered 2.1bn page views compared to over 4bn for Google.

The news that Bebo has overtaken Google in page view rankings will be welcomed by Yahoo!, which has just won the contract to sell advertising across the social network.

Bebo has a one-ad-per-page policy, and Yahoo! will be responsible for selling all standard inventory while the Bebo sales team concentrates on more engaging marketing.
