New British tennis hope Murray eyes stardom at Wimbledon

LONDON - Today could witness the arrival of a new British sports star and brand endorser as 18-year-old Andrew Murray enters Court One at Wimbledon in front of a global TV audience, playing for a third round place in the world's most famous tennis tournament.

Murray has been tipped by his coach as having the promise to go as far as and even further than temperamental teenage footballer Wayne Rooney.

Mark Petchey, who has only been Murray's coach for three weeks, said: "Andy may even be a bigger star than Wayne Rooney. He could be even better than Rooney because England may never win the World Cup and Andy may well win Wimbledon."

Expectation is gearing up to the level seen when Britain's last great tennis hope Tim Henman emerged, going on to build and then dash hopes with a string of semi- and quarter-final defeats at Wimbledon.

The high profile earned by Henman, now 30, led Ariel and Robinsons to sign him up to appear in a number of campaigns over the years, with his latest Ariel deal continuing until 2007. Other brands will no doubt be in touch with Murray's agent, should he progress this afternoon.

Henman and Murray are the only Britons left in the men's singles competition following Greg Rusedski's exit last night to Joachim Johansson, who won 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Murray's match against 14th seed Radek Stepanek is the third scheduled to be held on Court One today.
