Networks lose out to hotshops in COI review

LONDON - COI Communications has made sweeping changes to its £156m roster, ditching five network agencies to accommodate creative hotshops.

Euro RSCG London, Grey, JWT, Saatchi & Saatchi and Ogilvy & Mather have all been dumped as COI looks to inject new blood. Fallon, which gained a place on the roster following the previous review, has also lost its place without having run a single COI campaign.

Wieden & Kennedy, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, VCCP, Clemmow Hornby Inge and Farm have all won places on the roster, alongside 16 reappointed agencies including Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, DDB London, Lowe and St Luke's.

Three regional agencies have also been added. Cravens, Different and Golley Slater have been hired to provide more alternatives to the London-based shops.

Peter Buchanan, the deputy chief executive of COI, said the strong performance by some of the smaller, younger agencies had influenced the changes. He added that the new roster agencies "don't necessarily follow the rules. They look for opportunities outside of traditional advertising and have other communications solutions."

The COI roster will be run exactly as before, with roster agencies invited to pitch for each brief. It will be in place until 2009.
