The exhibition venue has doubled the amount of waste that it sends to be recycled instead of to landfill in just two years, from 19% in 2008 to 40% in 2010.

The unit - which allows waste to be separated and treated prior to being collected - was converted from an unused catering unit following a £330,000 investment.

"Every year across The NEC Site, we generate around 3,000 tonnes of waste as a result of the 214 events that we hold, both at The NEC and the LG Arena. As a leader in our markets, we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint and have committed to recycling 50% of all waste generated on site by 2012," said The NEC managing director Kathryn James.

As well as the significant saving the Waste Pre-Treatment Centre has diverted 992 tonnes of waste from landfill, equating to a carbon saving of 406 tonnes of CO2.
