The historical event space said its applications are up 20% from the previous tender in 2006.

"The tender for catering contracts always attracts intense competition from within the industry and we are delighted to have received a record number of applications from excellent caterers of all sizes," said Natural History Museum operation manager Nigel Mullins.

The London venue accommodates around 200 commercial events a year, co-ordinated exclusively by those on its supplier list.

Successful caterers can access new business opportunities and client events, including those held within the new Darwin Centre,
The accreditation process requires caterers to demonstrate effective service of dinners and receptions for up to 1,200 guests, a minimum of two years experience catering at major London venues, and an ability to enhance the events business at the museum.

The venue will announce its 2010-2013 preferred catering suppliers in October.
