Edwards, who has been chief executive of the National Magazine Company since 2005, will succeed George Green who retires at the end of June.

He will take up the new role at NatMags' parent company on February 1 and will be based in the US. Edwards has also been appointed as executive vice chairman of Hearst Magazines and vice chairman of the National Magazine Company

Hearst Magazines International is responsible for all of Hearst Magazines' non-US and non-UK business and will, in the future, include NatMags, according to the group.

The group said an announcement about a new chief executive for NatMags will be made in due course.

Edwards, who joined NatMags in 1989, will continue to lead the business until the appointment is made.
