Nationalist Daily Ireland to launch after initial setbacks

LONDON - A new Irish national daily paper the Daily Ireland will launch in Belfast tomorrow morning, despite initial setbacks involving a court case with Rupert Murdoch.

The press magnate took publisher Anderstown News, based in Belfast, to court last June over the planned use of its working title Ireland Today.

As previously reported on Brand Republic, Murdoch -- who owns the trademark in the UK and Ireland for the Today name -- successfully stopped Anderstown from using the title. Murdoch owned the Today newspaper in the UK, started by Eddie 1987, which was closed in 1995.

However, the pro-nationalist newspaper has now successfully made it to launch and aims to fill what Mairtin O'Muilleoir, managing director of Anderstown, previously called "a real window of opportunity for the provision of a strongly pro-nationalist newspaper".

"It's a real triumph to see Daily Ireland on the newsstands after almost a year of intense preparations. This is a wonderful boost to the economy of west Belfast and a fillip to readers seeking a paper which speaks up for them," O'Muilleoir said.

He added that the Daily Ireland team "intend to provide a fresh, vibrant, dynamic package for the modern reader who wants a paper that is tops for sport, exclusives and features".

The paper has been designed by Canadian Tony Sutton and counts ex-Chicago Tribune editor Howard Tyner among its advisers. Maria McCourt will serve as editor and is joined at the paper by columnists including nationalist commentator John Coulter.

Anderstown News also publishes titles including the North Belfast News, South Belfast News and Irish-language daily La.
