National Savings & Investments to drop Sir Alan Sugar from future ads

LONDON - Sir Alan Sugar has been axed as the face of government-owned financial services brand National Savings & Investments, to comply with Cabinet Office rules preventing politicians from appearing in government advertising.

Sugar was recently appointed to a government advisory role, as part of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's latest Cabinet reshuffle. He has appeared in NS&I TV, radio and press ads over the past five years.

An NS&I spokesman said: ‘Sir Alan Sugar will not appear in any future NS&I advertising campaigns following his recent appointment as enterprise champion. This is as per Cabinet Office rules which prohibit the use of political figures in government advertising.'

Despite complaints from the Conservative Party over an alleged conflict of interest, the BBC Trust recently confirmed that Sugar will be allowed to continue appearing in TV show The Apprentice.
