The former head of marketing for BBC2, BBC Four and the corporation's factual programme  joined the ailing social networking site in April 2009, with a brief to improve its fortunes in all non-US markets, including the UK.

Nuttall's departure will come as a blow to MySpace, which has lost more than 2m monthly unique users over the past year, according to UKOM. MySpace now attracts 3m unique users in the UK and faces stiff competition from Facebook and Twitter.

MySpace declined to comment.
