He will be replaced by Rebekah Horne, former MySpace general manager of Europe and Australia.

In an e-mail to staff, MySpace chief executive Owen Van Natta said Katz had "decided to leave the company to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities".

Travis joined News Corp in 2004 and headed the company's digital strategy, which led to the creation of Fox Interactive Media and the acquisitions of MySpace and IGN, among other sites. In February, 2006, Travis joined MySpace to lead the company's international expansion.

He added that "international will continue to be a major priority for MySpace going forward", revealing that Horne  will be taking over as managing director and senior vice-president of international.

The management changes follow the announcement last month that MySpace is cutting 300 staff across its international operations and will close offices in at least four countries. The social networking site will reduce its employees from 450 to 150 outside the US.

Earlier in the month, the company said it was cutting its US workforce by 30%.
