MTV will host the event at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on February 3. The benefit will broadcast on all MTV's global channels, reaching an audience of 1bn viewers, not including audiences of the broadcasters who sign up to the event for free.
So far, the channel has lined up Kelly Clarkson, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Hoobastank to sing live at the event, with Lopez contributing a pre-recorded performance and Sting, Ronan Keating, Nelly, Moby and 50 Cent having filmed specially taped messages of support for the show.
In addition to the celebrity effort, global news network CNN will provide nine originally produced vignettes chronicling the human element of tragedy in the aftermath of the tsunami.
MTV Asia Aid is being made available rights- and cost-free to all broadcasters globally to maximise distribution and help raise donations for primary recipient Unicef.
Bill Roedy, president of MTV Networks International, said: "This will be a global event airing on all MTV channels worldwide. The special will also be offered rights free and at no cost to all broadcasters, who we invite to join us in helping continue to generate donations to Unicef. Our goal is to reach at least three quarters of the world's TV households with this event."
The majority of the donations raised will be contributed to Unicef, with funds in Thailand also going to the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation and funds in India going to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
Richard Bridle, deputy regional director at Unicef, said: "'MTV Asia Aid' will help maintain the world's attention on the devastation and loss that the tsunami has caused for millions of people."
Official partners for the MTV Asia Aid are Toyota, HP and Samsung.
